We recently purchased a farmhouse that was built in 1900! Knowing it had withstood the test of time made it a little easier to say "Yes" to this house. It was a little rough around the edges when we purchased it, but we thought we could make it into our forever home. Frugal remodeling solutions would be necessary. We had searched high and low for the "perfect " home. We had a long list of must-haves, so it took us over a year to find this house.
Outside of Comfort Zone
My husband has had to go outside of his comfort zone (he's a brick mason)in order to get this home in livable condition. It wasn't easy and I will go into more detail about that as we go along. Once we took possession of the property a clock started ticking. We were now paying our mortgage and rent and we did not want to do that for very long. We had to try to find a frugal solution every time an issue arose.
Master Closet Issue
There were a number of issues that came up as my husband worked hard to get this home ready for us to live in. One issue was a master bedroom with one tiny closet. Yes, you heard that right only one very small closet for two adults. My husband had the idea of opening up a wall that backed up to another closet in another bedroom. The other bedroom in question had a huge walk-in closet and didn't need a second small closet.
Frugal Solution
I was a little apprehensive about creating another opening in this wall (118 year-old wall) to utilize said closet. As you can see by the accompanying picture he did a great job! To save money he did the work himself. After accessing the closet area he created matching sliding barn doors for the pair of closets. This frugal remodeling solution saved a huge amount of money, created needed storage space and was pleasing to look at. This is just one awesome project my husband tackled. I will share more as we go along.
